There are three main factors to consider with breast augmentation:
Augmentation can be performed through various incisions and approaches: inframammary (in the fold beneath the breast), periareolar (around the nipple), transaxillary (via the underarms), or transumbilical (via the belly button).
Implants can be placed in various locations within the breast- over or under the pectoralis muscle, and, more recently, in a position partially under the muscle (“dual plane” placement).
Implant selection is a critical factor. Determining the size of implant needed or desired is key, and will be discussed at your consultation. As of fall 2007, the FDA has approved the use of newer, safer silicone implants. So, the option for saline or silicone implants is again available.
The selection of incision, implant location, and type of implant are determined individually, and even rarely may be different for each breast. Your consultation with Dr. Lou will help formulate a custom plan for your breast augmentation.
