About RF Skin Tightening

When you're born, you have a full stock of the nutrients elastin and collagen that make your skin soft, smooth, resilient, and healthy. Eventually, this natural stock of nutrients becomes depleted and the skin of your body and face decreases in resiliency, causing wrinkles, lines, and skin that sags. If you want to improve the tightness and general health of your skin without surgery, consider RF skin tightening at Lou Plastic Surgery in Houston, TX. Using state-of-the-art equipment, nonsurgical skin tightening stimulates the natural production of elastin and collagen in the areas treated so you can develop healthier, firmer skin. During the initial consultation, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Derek C. Lou will be happy to discuss the benefits of Forma and Exilis skin tightening with his Houston, TX patients looking to firm the skin on their face or body without the time and expense of a surgical lift. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Lou in Houston, TX to learn more about your options.

Ideal Candidates

Surgical skin tightening or "lifts," like facelifts, are still the best way to minimize loose, sagging skin. Forma may be a good option if you don't want to have a surgical procedure. Nonsurgical skin tightening may be used on many areas of the body and face, such as the stomach, neck, thighs, and arms. The ideal patients for Forma or Exilis:

  • Are in good general health
  • Are near or at a stable, healthy weight
  • Have light or medium loose skin on the body or face
  • Have wrinkles or lines on the body or face
  • Want to improve the appearance and health of their skin

Procedure Technique

To begin the procedure, the areas to be treated will be thoroughly cleaned to eliminate any dirt, oil, makeup, and lotions. Anesthesia options may be provided upon your request; however, many patients feel that any pain from the treatment is brief and easily tolerated. Once you are ready, the Forma or Exilis handpiece will be evenly passed over the skin several times for an efficient session. The radiofrequency energy stimulates the body to start producing elastin and collagen, which firms and tightens the skin. A session may take around 30 – 90 minutes based on the size and number of areas treated. Once the treatment is complete, you'll be allowed to leave and get back to your normal routine.

What to Expect

Following your skin tightening procedure, the affected skin can be slightly red, swollen, or numb. This is normal and will resolve naturally in a few days. In your consultation, Dr. Lou will discuss methods to care for the treated skin at home after your treatment, including keeping the skin protected and moisturized from the sun. Many patients won't be able to see noticeable improvements right after their procedure. Since the elastin and collagen stimulation and growth is a slow process, you should expect to see the full results of the procedure within several months after your session. However, your results should last a long time and enhance the general appearance and health of your skin. You will probably need several sessions to achieve the most ideal outcome. At your initial consultation, Dr. Lou can help you develop your custom plan for treatment to meet your needs and cosmetic goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is collagen?
A protein-based tissue, collagen is produced naturally in your body. Along with other functions, it works to help keep skin elastic, hydrated, and firm. However, through the normal aging process, your supply of collagen gets depleted. This leads to less elastic, thinner, and looser skin. With nonsurgical methods, the production of collagen is stimulated to allow the skin to be firmer and healthier over time.

Is the procedure painful?
During your session, you might feel a bit of warmth; however, you should still feel comfortable. A numbing cream can be applied to your skin before the treatment, but this is typically not necessary. If you're nervous before your session, ask a team member what to expect.

What can I expect after my treatment?
Following a skin tightening treatment, you might have some redness, inflammation, or numbness in the areas that received treatment. This will usually fade in a few days. The results of your treatment will continue to develop in the months after your procedure as collagen continues to be produced. Some patients may need multiple sessions before achieving their desired outcome.

Should I get nonsurgical or surgical skin tightening?
During your consult, a member of our team will ask you to talk about your concerns and goals. What you want, along with a physical examination of your skin to assess tone, will decide if you would benefit from a nonsurgical treatment for tightening your skin. In general, nonsurgical treatments are designed for patients with early problems with loose skin. Moderate to severe loose skin will usually require surgery to remove the excess flaps.
