Baldness is a significant concern for a number of patients, whether it's brought on by genetics, age, hormones, health conditions, or from styling practices and/or products. With current advances in research within the hair restoration industry, new procedures are being made to help fight the condition. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a state-of-the-art nonsurgical treatment for men and women that's showing remarkable results in slowing, stopping, and even reversing baldness. PRP has also shown promising results in individuals with alopecia areata or thinning eyebrows. Plastic surgeon Dr. Derek Lou of Lou Plastic Surgery is just one of a small number of hair restoration surgeons to provide this revolutionary treatment in Houston, TX. By combining a strong solution of hair growth factors and bioactive proteins, Dr. Lou can help to strengthen your hair, resulting in thicker, longer, healthy locks.
"Dr. Lou was great! He completely put me at ease. I had something done that I thought would be more complicated. He explained the procedure and said it could be done in his office in a 30 minute time span. So easy! Now I regret waiting so long."- A. / Healthgrades / Jan 10, 2019
"Dr. Lou and Erica are simply amazing! Dr. Lou is not only a very talented surgeon he is a very patient, nice, and comforting Dr. Him and Erica never made me feel rushed or like I was asking too many questions and made me feel completely comfortable, I love them and am forever grateful to them for changing my life. Allie has been wonderful with post op treatments as well, could not ask for a better team than Lou Plastic Surgery!"- S.H. / Google / Oct 16, 2019
"Dr. Lou and his team are absolutely phenomenal and were God sent. I'd previously considered another surgeon for my procedure but didn't feel quite comfortable with him. So, I searched my insurance portal, and found Dr. Lou. I respect how he believes in knowing exactly what he's going into before a surgical procedure. Therefore, I was scheduled to have several CAT scans done before cutting into the unknown. He was very attentive during my healing process, and even came to my aid on Christmas day to check on me. His right hand person/office manager, Erica is more kind than I can express! She assured me that everything would go as planned, and ALWAYS greeted me with a smile....she even took out time to listen to me speak about my past moments of depression due to my displeasure with my body. What more can I say? Dr. Lou is an absolutely AMAZING and extremely CARING surgeon!! I'd choose this practice all over again if need be."- C.Y. / Google / Oct 12, 2019
"I saw Dr. Lou for a second opinion after an incident involving my thumb. There's a long story behind how the injury got so bad, but finding Dr. Lou was the best thing that ever happened to me. I only wish I had known him at the onset of this ordeal. The day before I met Dr. Lou, another doctor (at a clinic) was trying to convince me to go into emergency surgery to open my thumb up for what they said was infected very badly. Turns out, there was no infection at all, which was exactly what Dr. Lou confirmed before the results even came back. Dr. Lou is the best in my opinion. A doctor has to be able to listen (and there was a lot of background to give him), have compassion for the patient (which I was totally convinced he cared about me, what I was going through and my fears) and still provide the best solution for the problem. He had to clean up (cut) my thumb pretty good (and by good - it wasn't pretty, but I felt nothing b/c I was numb), but I immediately started the down road to recovery which no other doctor (I had seen 3 already) could get me to. It's because of Dr. Lou and his staff that I write this long review. I haven't experienced anything this traumatic in my adult life! Some people would say "it's just a thumb"...but you don't realize how much you need a thumb until it's almost gone! I'm almost 100% healed and Dr. Lou and his nurses have guided me every step of the way. They make you feel like family and you just don't get better than that these days! Thank you for everything Dr. Lou, Erika and Allie!"- K.M. / Google / Oct 11, 2019
"I wanted to write a review to thank Erika for helping me arranged my appointment with Dr. Lou to get some injections done. She helped me iron out some questions I had about the injectable products. I've been going to Dr. Lou for over a year now and his work is superior and he really provides excellent patient care. I definitely recommend Dr. Lou for all cosmetic needs whether it's small or large. Remember to ask for Erika when you call to book your appointment."- A.H. / Yelp / Oct 03, 2019
Any patient experiencing balding is potentially a good candidate for PRP treatments while patients with early hair loss tend to respond best. PRP is best suited for those with androgenic alopecia, an inherited type of hair loss that mostly presents on the top part of the head. For women, this can appear as a broadening part with normal hair density on the backside of the scalp. Those with areas of "poor quality" hair growth of the scalp with normal-reacting hair follicles usually have the greatest success with PRP hair regrowth therapy.
A nonsurgical process, the PRP treatment is a brief one-hour in-office visit. The process starts with acquiring a little bit of your blood and putting it in a specialized machine, which spins the blood at high speed to remove the platelets from the rest of the blood elements. After that, a local anesthetic will be applied to your scalp and the platelet-rich plasma is introduced into areas of your head that are bald or thinning. Then, microneedling is performed on the scalp to cause micro-trauma and micro-channels to the epidermis, which triggers the PRP and allows it to seep deep into the skin. Our routine for nonsurgical management of baldness consists of an initial therapy and maintenance therapies approximately every nine months to a year.
What to Expect
There is no recovery period necessary after this process with virtually no limits or constraints. If anything, patients can develop some discoloration, minor swelling, and mild discomfort to the treated regions. These symptoms may last up to two days. While outcomes differ for every individual, aesthetic results are commonly noticed approximately 4 – 6 months after the initial session and will continue to improve for as much as a complete year following therapy. Since PRP isn't a permanent solution for reversing hair loss, follow-up sessions are recommended every 12 – 18 months. It's essential to note that PRP doesn't develop new hair follicles in areas where you're already bald. It's utilized to help reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will create fuller, healthier, longer hair fibers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does PRP therapy for hair cost?
PRP therapy costs will depend on many factors, including how many treatments you are getting. During your consultation, Dr. Lou will create your PRP treatment plan to maximize your results. Then, he can discuss the cost of your PRP therapy. He will also tell you about any current specials being offered and which payment methods Lou Plastic Surgery accepts.
Can PRP be combined with other hair treatments?
Many patients combine other treatments with PRP therapy, including topical medication applied at home, microneedling, and more. Dr. Lou will assess your scalp and level of hair loss before creating your custom PRP therapy treatment plan. He will discuss his recommendations for what in-office treatments are best for your hair loss and any home products that might help between appointments.
How often should I get PRP treatments?
Most patients need at least three PRP treatments performed one month apart to see results. Your specific PRP therapy program will depend on the degree of hair loss and your goals. Based on this, Dr. Lou can recommend how many PRP treatments you will need and how often you should schedule them to stimulate your hair growth. If your condition is more advanced, he may recommend more treatments initially, which can be performed less frequently once you begin to see results.
How effective is PRP therapy at treating hair loss?
The outcomes of your PRP therapy will depend on the severity of your hair loss, how many treatments you get, and other factors. You should also remember to be patient with your results, as it takes time for new hair growth to become visible after the PRP stimulates the process. During your consultation, Dr. Lou will discuss if you are a good candidate and what results you can realistically expect. You may need to continue to get PRP therapy to maintain your results and limit future hair loss.
Are the PRP injections painful?
While the serum is being prepared, a numbing cream will be applied to your scalp to keep you comfortable during the PRP injections. This should minimize your discomfort during the procedure, but talk to Dr. Lou if you have any concerns or pain. Your scalp may remain numb or tingle for a while after your PRP injections, but this is temporary and normal sensation should return shortly.
