Breast Implant Options

Choosing the Right Breast Implant

Shape
Implants are made in either a round or teardrop shape. Round implants are typically the most popular, as they look more natural and add fullness to the upper chest.
Size
The size of the implants you receive are determined by how much native breast tissue exists, as well as your desired size. During breast augmentation surgery at our clinic in Houston, Dr. Lou may switch out different implant sizes until they match your previously expressed goal.
Profile
Breast profile refers to the side angle view of the breast. Some patients prefer an intermediate profile while others prefer low or high breast projections.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
You should be physically healthy with developed breasts. Patients must be at least 18 years old to undergo breast enhancement via saline implants, and at least 22 if using silicone.

Will I Need to Stay in the Hospital Overnight? What Is the Recovery Process Like?
Breast enhancement is an outpatient procedure and most patients go home the same day of their surgery. You may experience some discomfort as well as feelings of tightness and swelling in their breasts for several days following the procedure. Compression garments will be part of your recovery plan as they work to reduce swelling.
Patients can typically return to work within a few days after breast enhancement surgery. It is important to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for at least one month. However, most patients find that their recovery time is considerably shorter.
Will There Be Scarring?
Implant placement is based upon the implant size, your activity level, and body type. All attempts are made to hide scars within the natural creases of the body.
I Want to Have Children. Will I Be Able to Breastfeed If I Have Implants?
The ability to breastfeed following an augmentation depends on the implant placement and technique in addition to changes that occur while pregnant or nursing.
If breastfeeding is a priority, ideally, augmentation surgery should be postponed until your family is complete. Breastfeeding may eliminate or reduce potential future gain from surgery due to regressive changes that frequently occur during breastfeeding.
Can I Have My Implants Removed?
Dr. Lou offers breast revision surgery for those who would like their breast implants removed or replaced. It should be noted that implants can stretch the skin. After removal, some patients opt for a breast lift.
Do Implants Cause Breast Cancer?
According to the World Health Organization, breast implant-related ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma) is very rare and highly treatable. However, if you experience swelling, pain, or lumps in your breasts following your recovery, contact your primary care physician and Dr. Lou immediately.
How Do I Know If I Need a Breast Lift or Augmentation? What’s the Difference?
Augmentation enhances breast size and shape while breast lifts raise the position of the breasts. Loose skin is also removed during breast lift surgery. Depending on your treatment goals, Dr. Lou may recommend one or both of these procedures.
